“Kelly Alison is also in “Fourteen” and continues the process of artistic commentary based on corrosive or ridiculous news items. Her largest piece at Art Car, the 7’ x 10’ “House of Cards” is about the “financial mess we are in,” Kelly said. “The cards flying out of the magic hat represent mortgage backed securities. Small houses are burning and under water. A bird turns the lever of power while standing on tarot cards that symbolize fraud and greed, the ten of diamonds and jack of clubs. A machine spitting dollars is the Fed printing money, and it supports the nearby military drones. That money machine is balanced on a baby’s back.” (The painting’s other baby is an art historical nod to Keith Haring.) Article by Virginia Billeaud Anderson

There is also an Exhibition catalog, and an Interview with Kelly Alison on KPFT archives Sept. 23, 2011

The Queen of Sheba and King Solomon meet with the help of the Hoopoe bird. Here is the story: One night King Solomon invited all the birds to sing to his noble guests. All came except the hoopoe. When found, the bird explained that he was not guilty of disrespect. On the contrary, for the last three months he had hardly tasted any food or water, flying all over the world to discover if any place existed which was not yet subject to Solomon. Finally he found the land of Sheba. The lush land in the middle of the desert boasted gold, silver, and great gems, and one of the most valuable treasures of the royal line was the throne, intricately carved of precious woods and inlaid with ivory and gold. The inhabitants of Sheba did not know the meaning of war, said the hoopoe….read more

SOCOTRA ISLAND, ECOLOGICAL MARVEL

Socotra, an island off the coast of Yemen, was named a World Heritage Site by the Unesco. It is considered an ecological marvel, with hundreds of endemic species of plants and birds (found nowhere else on earth).

While researching today’s DAILY TWEEP, I image googled “Yemen”.
